I'm writing an article about home kitchen remedies and was checking out some of the research on cloves. I remembered that they contained 30x more anti-oxidants than blueberries but then saw a trial where it was a more potent anti-oxidant than Vitamin E. That's big as Vitamin E is an incredible anti-oxidant! There is a lot of research on Vitamin E, it's recommended to protect against damage from PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids), promote fertility, resolve so many skin health issues from sunburn to eczema and even prevent cardiovascular disease. So why aren't we talking more about cloves and their anti-oxidant capability?! The problem with herbs is that they are all different so it's hard to standardise like a supplement. The phytochemical content can vary based on where it's grown, when it's harvested, the stress its been under when growing and so on and so on. So I understand for the more right-brained research that herbs are hard to quantify. Herbs are more complicated than vitamins. Vitamins are isolated extracts of compounds found in food. They are not whole. But herbs we can connect with like people, they have stories and history. They are wholer than whole! I worry though this aspect holds herbal medicine back? We also need the science that we get with supplements so people start to take more notice of herbalists. The naturopathic principles of healing led me to natural medicine in the first place. Working with natural medicine encompasses science, philosophy, theology, art, geology, cosmology - you name it and it all connects. There needs to be an understanding of something deeper, a connection with God and creation. I liked this paragraph in Deborah Frances' book so I thought I would share it. I agree we are no longer in balance with nature, although I'm sure many of us would like to be. So how do we return to our natural state? Hmm in some ways its easier said then done but the foundations of health remain the same- good quality food, clean water, exercising in the open air, sunshine, restful sleep and loving relationships. But then we have the layers of toxicity, trauma and deficiency that our body is trying to dance through. I remember Hans-Gunther @wholisticlivinguniversity said that living in the sub-natural environment requires super-natural cures. That always stayed with me and I think about it a lot. Words can reveal and hide so much. 📣This Thursday I've asked the incredible Ayurvedic alchemist Andrew Mason to share some of the secrets of Ayurvedic and alchemical medicine making. @vedic_alchemy started studying holistic medicine 20 years ago and completing his training as an Āyurvedic practitioner in 2006. He then undertook a unique and intensive apprenticeship in the east, learning astrological techniques and the closely guarded processes 🤫 involved in the manufacturing of ancient alchemical remedies. 🌙 Many of the remedies he makes could only be replicated by a brave and adventurous alchemist!
