What does chromium do?
Glucose tolerance factor is the biologically active form of chromium which stabilizes blood sugar.
Glucose intolerance is the main symptom for diabetes and reversing a chromium deficiency has been shown to lower body weight and increase lean body mass and decrease total cholesterol and triglyceride levels through increasing glucose tolerance.
Chromium also plays a role in the metabolism of fats, carbs and maintains structural integrity of DNA and RNA.
What is chromium good for?
Chromium has been used therapeutically for relieving symptoms of or preventing:
High cholesterol, type II diabetes, obesity, hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia, bodybuilding, seasonal effective disorder, hypertension, myopia.
How much chromium do I need?
The RDA is 200mg/day for men andwomen.
How do I know I need chromium?
It is estimated that around 50% of the population may be chromium deficient. This is because food processing removes a large amount of chromium and our soils are increasingly demineralised so our food naturally contains less chromium.
Symptoms of chromium deficiency include weight loss, peripheral neuropathy, increased cholesterol and mental confusion.
Exercise, physical trauma and refined carbohydrates also increases the body’s need for chromium.
